Health and wellbeing are important no matter what your age, but they are especially so as you get older. As time goes on, your body becomes less able to bounce back from injury or illness, so it’s important to take extra care of yourself to stay healthy and prevent serious complications later in life. These eight health tips can help you do just that, whether you’re 25 or 85!


Meditation is a great way to improve your health and wellbeing. Numerous studies show that it can reduce stress, blood pressure, anxiety, depression and even pain.

One of our favorite parts about meditation is how easy it is to do: You don’t need any special equipment or training; you just sit quietly and focus on your breathing. If that’s not how you roll (or if you have trouble quieting your mind), try another form of mindful relaxation like yoga or stretching. The key is taking some time for yourself—you’ll feel calmer in no time!

Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise does a body good. Not only does it reduce your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and stroke, but it can also help boost your mood and mental acuity.

The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity per week, as well as muscle-strengthening activities at least two days a week. If you’re starting out exercising regularly, try hiring a personal trainer or signing up for a class that works towards achieving these goals together with other people looking to start an exercise regimen.

Manage Stress

Now more than ever, it’s important to find ways to manage stress. While we all have different reactions and triggers, there are a few things we can all do on a regular basis. It’s time to begin taking care of your health and wellbeing by avoiding chronic stressors in your life.

Here are some tips on how to manage stress better:

Try journaling

Keep a journal and write down what’s going on in your life and why you feel stressed. Sometimes just getting it all out there can be therapeutic and help you see things from a different perspective.

Sleep More

You probably know that you should be getting at least 7-9 hours of sleep each night. What you might not know is why.

When we’re deprived of sleep, our bodies don’t have time to repair damage and restore themselves back to normal. It makes sense, then, that sleeping too much can actually make your body more vulnerable (especially if you’re going for more than 12 hours). Instead of focusing on how long you sleep each night, it might be better focus on making sure that when you are asleep, your brain and body are getting a chance to recover from a long day. So, focus on the quality of your sleep.

To improve the quality of your sleep, you can follow some simple tips:

  1. Follow your sleep schedule
  2. Don’t drink anything caffeinated at least 3 hours before bedtime
  3. Don’t eat anything heavy before bedtime
  4. Do 10 minutes of de-compressing. Avoid going to bed immediately after you’ve experienced stress.

Eat Well

No matter how hard you try, it’s nearly impossible to stay healthy if you don’t put good stuff in your body. To eat well, load up on fruits and veggies—the more colorful, the better—and lean proteins. Choose organic foods whenever possible; they not only taste better but they’re also better for you.

Also focus on preparing meals at home and avoid eating out too often; studies show restaurant food is higher in sodium, fat and calories compared with food prepared at home.

Finally, drink plenty of water and get some exercise; regular physical activity can help keep your weight down and reduce stress levels. Bottom line: If you treat your body right, it will reward you by staying healthy!

Spend Time with Family & Friends

Spending time with family and friends can help improve your health.

A recent study found that spending just an hour per week with loved ones reduces risk of death by more than 50%. That’s a greater impact than working out, losing weight, or eating healthy. Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t feel they have enough time in their day to spend with loved ones. But if you prioritize spending time with friends and family, you may be able to make huge strides toward improving your health.

Avoid Vices

Everyone knows they should avoid habits like smoking, overeating, or spending too much time in front of a computer screen. These vices aren’t just unhealthy; they’re also costly.

If you smoke one pack of cigarettes a day, that habit costs you £2,000 per year—and it could take years off your life. Cutting down on these small vices can have a big impact on your overall health and wellbeing.

Plus, you’ll also have more money to spend towards something good and fun like a massage, rollercoasters or whatever makes you happy! That, in itself, can improve your health and mood.

Keep Learning New Things

Building on new knowledge is a great way to keep your brain engaged and healthy, because it sparks more synapses (connections between neurons) in your brain.

Be sure to set aside time each day—even if just 15 minutes—to learn something new. It could be as simple as learning a new word, or trying out a new cooking recipe from around the world.

Either way, you’ll feed your curiosity and want for learning—and ultimately stimulate your brain. After all, what good is it to keep living if you’re not still curious about why things are how they are?
