What are flavonoids?

Flavonoids are various compounds found naturally in many fruits and vegetables. These natural compounds act as antioxidants and help detoxify the body.

There are six different types of flavonoids found in food, and each kind is broken down by your body in a different way but provides similar health benefits.

Types of flavonoids

Flavonols

Flavonols are well known for their antioxidant properties which have shown to protect the body against cardiovascular disease. These can be obtained from broccoli, kale, grapes, berries and parsley.

Flavones

These anti-inflammatory flavonoids can be found in parsley, red peppers, celery as well as chamomile, and peppermint teas.

Flavan-3-ols

These are very nutrient-dense and can be obtained from a variety of teas like green tea, white tea, oolong tea, and black tea.

Flavanones

These are well known for helping you manage your weight and cholesterol better as well as reducing inflammation. You can obtain these in citrus fruits like lemons, oranges and grapefruit.

Anthocyanidins

These flavonoids are found in plants and fruit with red, purple, and blue pigment such as red and purple grapes, cranberries or blueberries.

Isoflavones

These are great for balancing hormones and can be obtained from soybeans or soy products.
