What is glycogen?

Glycogen is a stored form of glucose that’s accumulated in response to insulin which pushes the glucose into cells like muscle and body fat.

Glycogen is mainly stored in the liver and muscles and acts as a source of energy if blood glucose levels decrease.

When you are in a calorie deficit, or you are experiencing low blood glucose levels, or you need more energy to fuel your daily errands or exercise, then glycogen stores are broken down. It gets broken down by an enzyme called glycogen phosphorylase which aims to supply the body with energy. When a person’s glycogen stores are being broken down and converted into glucose, that’s when weight loss can occur.

The amount of glycogen stored in the body varies depending on a person’s body composition, activity level, and muscular physique. However, an average person can store up to 2,000 calories which lasts approximately 2 hours of exercise.
